1. Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how anon.li ("we," "our," or "us") collects, uses, and protects your information when you use our website https://anon.li and our associated services (collectively, the "Service").

By using the Service, you consent to the data practices described in this policy.

2. Information We Collect

We adhere to the principle of data minimization. We only collect the information necessary to provide and secure our Service.

2.1. Account Information

  • Email Address: Required for authentication, sending system notifications (e.g., verification, password reset, and magic links), and as the destination for forwarded emails.
  • Profile Data: If you sign in with Google or GitHub, we receive your email address and basic profile (name and avatar) from that provider.
  • Credentials & Vault: If you set a password, we store only verifier data derived from it, together with your end-to-end encrypted vault (encryption keys wrapped with a key derived from your password in your browser). We cannot unwrap your vault.
  • Subscription Data: We process payment information through our third-party providers: Stripe for card payments and NOWPayments for cryptocurrency payments. We store your plan, billing status, and the provider's customer and subscription identifiers. We do not store full credit card numbers on our servers.
  • Referrals: If you join through a referral link, we record which account referred you so the complimentary plan can be granted.

2.2. Service Data (Alias, Drop, and Form)

  • Email Aliases: We store the aliases you create and their associated configurations (forwarding recipients, custom domains, and encrypted label/note metadata where configured). For each alias we also keep aggregate counters — the number of emails forwarded and blocked, and the time of the last email — which power your dashboard and plan limits.
  • Forwarding Recipients & Custom Domains: We store your forwarding addresses, their verification status, any PGP public keys you add, and the DNS verification and DKIM settings of your custom domains. DKIM private keys are encrypted at rest.
  • Encrypted Files: Files uploaded via anon.li Drop are encrypted in your browser before upload using AES-256-GCM. File names, titles, and messages are encrypted the same way. We store only encrypted data and cannot access the unencrypted content of your files; we do see technical metadata needed to store and serve them (file size, file type, upload time, expiry, and download counts).
  • Drop Recipients & Access Logs: If you share a Drop with named recipients, we store their email addresses and email each of them a personal link. That link never contains the decryption key. To show you who opened a Drop, we log each view and download with the time, the event type, the recipient (if any), the browser user agent, and a peppered one-way hash of the visitor's IP address. You never see the IP hash; we keep it only to detect abuse.
  • Encrypted Forms: Form titles, descriptions, and field definitions are stored in plaintext, because anyone with the form link must be able to read them. Submissions are encrypted in the respondent's browser to a key only the form owner holds, so we cannot read responses or attached files. With each submission we store the time, a peppered one-way hash of the respondent's IP address (for abuse prevention), and, if the respondent submitted through the API while signed in, their account ID.

2.3. Email Traffic Data

  • No Hosted Mailbox Storage: We do not provide stored inboxes or long-term message archives for forwarded mail. Email content is processed by the mail stack for delivery, and the pipeline may queue messages transiently during transport.
  • Metadata Logging: We temporarily log minimal metadata (sender address, recipient alias, timestamp) for a maximum of 7 days. This is used solely for delivery debugging, spam prevention, and usage calculation. Logs are automatically purged after this period.
  • PGP Encryption: If you enable PGP encryption, emails are encrypted with your public key before forwarding, ensuring we cannot read the content.
  • Separate Mail Infrastructure: Alias forwarding is handled by a dedicated mail stack outside this web application repository. The product behavior described here reflects that deployed mail infrastructure and its published companion code, not this repository alone.

2.4. Teams, API Access, and Connected Apps

  • Teams (Organizations): If you create or join a team, we store the team's name, its members and their roles, and the email addresses of people invited to it. Aliases, recipients, domains, Drops, and Forms created inside a team belong to the team, not to the individual member. Team owners and admins can see the team's audit trail (for example, membership, billing, and security-setting changes).
  • API Keys: We store only a SHA-256 hash of each API key, its prefix, its label, and when it was created and last used. The full key is shown to you once and never stored.
  • Connected Apps (OAuth / MCP): If you authorize an app such as an AI assistant to access your account, we store the app's registration details, the permissions (scopes) you granted, and the access and refresh tokens issued to it. You can review and revoke connected apps from your account settings.

2.5. Abuse Reports and Security Records

  • Abuse Reports: When someone reports abuse, we store the reported resource, the reason and description they give, an optional contact email (used only to send updates about the report), and a peppered one-way hash of their IP address. If a reporter provides a Drop decryption key so we can review the content, that key is encrypted at rest.
  • Security Audit Log: We record sensitive account and administrative actions (for example, API key creation, account deletion, bans, and team membership changes) with internal account IDs and the time. These entries do not include IP addresses.

2.6. Technical Data

  • Cookies: We use only essential, first-party cookies to manage your authenticated session. We do not use third-party tracking or advertising cookies.
  • Analytics & product monitoring: We use PostHog (EU region) to understand aggregate usage and improve the product. Browser analytics are sent through our own domain and use no cookies (a pseudonymous identifier is stored in your browser's local storage). Session replay is disabled, and we honor the browser's Do Not Track signal. Automatic interaction tracking masks all on-screen text and element attributes, so the addresses and content on your screen are never captured. Before any event leaves your browser we strip URL fragments, which carry Drop decryption keys, and filter out resource identifiers. Analytics events are discarded on public Drop and Form links and on password-reset, recipient-verification, and 2FA pages. Our servers also send a small set of events, such as checkout and subscription activation, and record which MCP tools a connected app calls. The tools' inputs and outputs are removed before sending. After you sign in, events are linked to your account by an internal ID only, never your email.
  • IP Addresses: We process IP addresses for security purposes (rate limiting, fraud prevention, DDoS protection) but do not link them to your identity for tracking purposes. Where we keep a record tied to an IP address (abuse reports, form submissions, Drop access logs), we store only a peppered one-way hash, never the raw address.
  • Session Metadata: Active login sessions include device metadata such as user agent so you can review and manage signed-in devices from your dashboard. We do not store IP addresses in session records.

3. How We Use Your Information

We use your information solely to:

  • Provide the Service: Create aliases, forward emails, facilitate encrypted file sharing and form collection, run teams, and manage your account.
  • Process Payments: Handle subscriptions and billing through Stripe and, for cryptocurrency payments, NOWPayments.
  • Ensure Security: Monitor for abuse, prevent spam, enforce rate limits, and protect our infrastructure.
  • Communicate: Send service email you need, such as sign-in links, verification, billing and payment notices, Drop expiry and download alerts, form submission notifications, and moderation notices.
  • Send on Your Behalf: Email the people you choose, such as named Drop recipients and team invitees, when you share with or invite them.
  • Product Emails: Send a short series of onboarding tips after sign-up, occasional upgrade suggestions based on your usage, and a reminder if you leave a checkout unfinished. Every one of these emails has a one-click unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing never affects the service email above.

We do not use your information for advertising, sell it, or share it with third parties for their own purposes.

4. Third-Party Sub-processors

We share data only with trusted partners necessary for operation. All partners are contractually obligated to protect your data in accordance with applicable privacy laws.

5. Data Retention

  • Account Data: Retained as long as your account is active. When you delete your account, your personal aliases, recipients, domains, Drops, Forms and their submissions, files, API keys, sessions, credentials, vault materials, and the account record are removed from live systems immediately, and any active personal subscription is canceled. Any saved local browser trust becomes unusable. Resources you created inside a team belong to the team and remain with it. If you are the sole owner of a team, you must transfer ownership or delete the team before you can delete your account. Rolling disaster-recovery backups may retain historical snapshots for their normal retention period and are not an account restore path.
  • Metadata Logs: Automatically deleted after 7 days.
  • Alias Counters: Kept for as long as the alias exists.
  • Encrypted Files: Deleted according to your configured expiration settings, or immediately upon manual deletion.
  • Drop Recipients & Access Logs: Kept for as long as the Drop exists and deleted with it.
  • Form Submissions: Deleted automatically once they are older than your plan's retention window (30 days on Free, 90 days on Plus, 365 days on Pro and Business), or immediately when you delete them or the form. A content-free usage record of each accepted submission (its ID, owner, and time) is kept for 90 days for quota accounting and then deleted.
  • Sessions: Kept until you sign out or the session expires; expired sessions are purged daily.
  • Subscription Records: Our own subscription records are deleted with your account. Stripe and NOWPayments retain invoices and transaction records as their own legal obligations require, and we keep the financial records that tax and accounting law require us to keep.
  • Abuse Reports & Security Audit Log: Retained after the related account or resource is deleted so we can investigate abuse, enforce our terms, and meet legal obligations. Audit entries reference internal IDs only.
  • Backups: Rolling backups are retained for up to 30 days for disaster recovery purposes.

6. Your Rights

Regardless of where you live, we respect your privacy rights. Under GDPR, CCPA, and other applicable laws, you have the right to:

  • Access: Request a copy of your personal data.
  • Portability: Export your data in a machine-readable format.
  • Correction: Update inaccurate information via your dashboard.
  • Deletion: Delete your account and all associated data at any time.
  • Restriction: Request limitation of processing in certain circumstances.
  • Objection: Object to processing based on legitimate interests.
  • Withdrawal: Withdraw consent at any time where processing is based on consent.

To exercise these rights, use the tools provided in your dashboard or contact us at privacy@anon.li. We will respond within 30 days.

7. Security

We implement robust security measures to protect your data:

  • Encryption in Transit: Connections to the service use TLS.
  • Encrypted Sensitive Fields: Security-sensitive application data such as TOTP secrets, backup codes, DKIM private keys, and abuse-report decryption keys are encrypted at rest by the application. Full database-at-rest guarantees also depend on the underlying infrastructure and storage providers.
  • Zero-Knowledge Architecture: For file sharing, encryption keys are generated in your browser and never transmitted to our servers.
  • No Plaintext Password Storage: anon.li supports magic-link verification and recovery, plus password-based sign-in for vault-enabled accounts. Passwords are stored only as verifier data, never in plaintext.
  • Two-Factor Authentication: Optional TOTP-based 2FA for additional account security.
  • Open Source Transparency: The public source repositories help users and researchers verify product behavior, but the deployed service still depends on infrastructure and operational controls outside the published code.

8. Children's Privacy

The Service is not intended for children under 13 years of age. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have collected data from a child under 13, we will delete it immediately. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such data, please contact us at privacy@anon.li.

9. International Data Transfers

Your information may be processed in countries other than your own, primarily the United States and the European Union. We ensure that international transfers comply with applicable data protection laws through:

  • Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) approved by the European Commission
  • Adequacy decisions where applicable
  • Additional technical and organizational safeguards

10. Do Not Track

We do not track users across third-party websites and do not engage in behavioral tracking or targeted advertising. Our analytics provider (PostHog, EU region) does not use cookies, and analytics honor your browser's Do Not Track setting.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes in our practices or for legal reasons. For significant changes, we will:

  • Post a notice on our website
  • Send an email notification to registered users
  • Update the "Last Updated" date at the top of this policy

Your continued use of the Service after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
