Introducing anon.li

What anon.li is and how it works: private email aliases with transient forwarding, and zero-knowledge file sharing where the keys never touch our servers.

anon.li started as two tools we wanted for ourselves: a way to hand out email addresses without giving away our real inbox, and a way to send someone a file without it sitting unencrypted on a company's servers. This post is what we shipped and how it actually works.

Introducing anon.li

Why anon.li?

A lot of privacy tools fail in one of two directions: they're too fiddly to use every day, or they put "private" on the label while still keeping everything in plaintext on a server. We tried to avoid both. Drop encrypts in your browser before anything uploads, so the keys never reach us. Alias forwards mail in real time instead of warehousing it. And the application code is open source, so none of that has to be taken on faith.

How we keep ourselves honest

The platform code is open source, so you can check the claims above against what actually runs instead of trusting a marketing page. We collect only what the service needs to work — no tracking pixels of our own, no analytics cookies, nothing sold on. And the business model is subscriptions, not ads, which is the only reason the incentives line up: we make money when you pay us, not when we learn more about you. The free tier stays free because a privacy tool that's paywalled out of reach isn't much of a privacy tool.
